The Oranging

The pumpkins are starting to turn orange, as good pumpkin do.

The oranging begins as yellow spots on the pumpkin skin, which darken and spread.

The shady leaves wither away, exposing the yellow speckled “Rocco” Pumpkin.

The New Master is still the badass of the patch, basketball-size and the orangest of them all.

Despite the continued growth of these pumpkins, the rest of the vines looks sickly and near-dead. I don’t think it’s supposed to look that way. Too much direct sun? Maybe next year we’ll plant our patch in the far corner of the back yard, where there’s deep shade and no other plants to compete with.
